Yeast infection is a female issue isn't it? Sorry to break
the illusion, but yeast infection in men does happen. In fact we all have candida albicans in our bodies. It
resides in our intestines and is quite harmless - provided it is kept firmly under control by the 'friendly' or
'good' bacteria in our gut and by a strong and healthy immune system.
Problems can arise if this balance is disturbed. The candida
can multiply and travel to other parts of the body including the genitals, mouth and throat.
One of the most common causes of yeast infection in both men
and women is the use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines. These drugs can disturb the balance of
bacteria in your system so that the 'friendly' or 'good' bacteria are unable to keep the candida under
control.
Other major causes include sexual transmission from an
infected partner and a diet high in sugar and yeast products (including bread and beer).
So what are the symptoms of yeast infection in men? The
common ones are:
- sugar cravings;
- carbohydrate cravings;
- itching;
- sexual dysfunction;
- mood swings;
- diarrhea;
- abdominal bloating;
- flatulence;
- headaches;
- fatigue;
- low energy;
- poor concentration; and
- congested sinuses
If you have a male yeast infection you may only have a few of
these symptoms but if you think you may have this condition it is important to get yourself checked out. A
confirmation of diagnosis is essential. After all, it could be something else that is causing the
problem.
If you've been diagnosed with a yeast overgrowth, now
what?
Well, the obvious answer is treatment. But, what do you want
to treat? The symptoms of your yeast overgrowth or the root causes of the condition? I hope the answer is the
root causes otherwise you risk suffering from recurring yeast infections. And that's no fun!
